The Vision: erasing earthly borders through the lens of the Carina Nebula.....

Astrophotography is for all; it does not matter who the astrophotographer is, where the astrophotographer comes from, or in what the astrophotographer believes – some two thousand years ago, Diogenes of Oenoanda wrote:

“while the various segments of the earth give different people a different country, the whole compass of this world gives all people a single country, the entire earth, and a single home, the world”

This image shows the whole Eta Carinae complex, (top facing north, left facing east) centred on η (Eta) Carinae, a binary star system at least 120 times the mass of the Sun and five million times as luminous as the Sun, which, with other star clusters, shapes and illuminates the Nebula. A Massive, Unmistakable Monument:

Writing some two thousand years ago, Diogenes of Oenoanda did not hide his ideas in a private library; instead, he built a massive, 80-meter-long stone portico wall in a crowded public square to boldly display Epicurean philosophy to everyone.

Similarly, the Carina Nebula is a colossal cosmic monument – spanning over 300 light-years across, making it one of the largest and brightest diffuse nebulae in the night sky. Imaging the Carina nebula acts as a collective human eye, gathering photons that travelled for 7,500 years, creating a digital “public square” where detailed light hidden from our naked eyes is made visible to everyone, everywhere.

From our perspective on Earth, we draw lines on maps and claim different territories: when looking at a vast interstellar structure like the Carina Nebula, geopolitical borders become meaningless, the nebula being a chaotic, interconnected web of gas and dust where everything is made of the same fundamental ingredients: our earthly divisions are artificial constructions when viewed against the backdrop of the broader universe.

The Epicurean “Cosmic Nursery”:

Diogenes’ wall focused heavily on Epicurean Physics, viewing the universe as made of eternal, swirling atoms colliding in a void to create innumerable worlds: the Carina Nebula is a hyperactive “cosmic nursery” where chaotic gas and dust collide, condense, and continuously give birth to new stars and solar systems, mirroring Epicurean atomism.

As an Epicurean, Diogenes made the point that the universe operates on rational, universal laws, stripping away the supernatural myths of his time. He proposed that all humans, animals, and stars are bound by the exact same laws of physics and composed of the same eternal atoms colliding in the void: the Carina Nebula is a heavy-element factory, the massive stars inside it forging elements like carbon, oxygen, and iron, blasting them into space via supernovae to form future planets and life.

By showing us a cosmic birthplace, the Carina Nebula underlines Diogenes’ claim: we all belong to the same cosmic country because we are all made of the exact same stardust.

A Beacon of Ataraxia (Tranquillity):

Diogenes created his inscription out of deep empathy, calling it a public “medicine” to heal human suffering, cure anxiety, and free humanity from the fear of death and gods. He chose specific Greek prose and painted the letters with vivid red pigment to ensure his message was striking, inviting, and emotionally comforting to passing travellers: the Carina Nebula glows with a warm, comforting light. It stands out as a vibrant sanctuary in the cold, dark void, mimicking Diogenes’ goal of bringing a serene haven of ataraxia (tranquillity) to a turbulent world.

Processed images of the Carina Nebula transform cold, raw scientific data into an emotional experience, evoking a sense of awe and tranquillity (ataraxia), making the viewer feel deeply connected to, and at home within, the vastness of space.

 The Ultimate Synthesis

Global astrophotography does exactly what Diogenes did on his stone wall: take the invisible, infinite cosmos and translate it into a beautiful, accessible visual language that reminds humanity of our shared origin and single cosmic home.
