The Vela Supernova Remnant (SNR), Gum 16, is a bright filamentary region within the much larger, overlapping Gum Nebula, Gum 12. Gum 16, 800 to 900 light-years distant is the expanding remains of a massive star that underwent a Type II supernova explosion roughly 11,000 years ago. The core of the collapsed star remains at the centre as the Vela Pulsar, spinning 11 times per second.
